Class Information

Teacher

Welcome to my class!

For those who don't know me, my name is Sav Proulx (or Mme. Sav), teaching grade 7 Early French Immersion. I'm looking forward to having you all in my class!

I take this opportunity to introduce you to my three partners in crime:

  • Bowie (grey), a cute little cat full of sass and attitude, who will do anything to eat the food off your plate
  • Moony (black), a quirky little monster who cannot sit still for more than 3 seconds.
  • Nova, highly protective and attentive, always on the job to keep us all safe

My favourite things are cows, books, art, video games and my pets. Bring up any topic in those areas, and I will be ready to chat for hours.

Can't wait for a fun and adventurous year!

Class Procedures/Rules

1.        Cell phones & electronic devices MUST be put away

  • SD33 has mandated a new Cell Phone Policy, meaning cellphones will be dropped off in a locked box in the classroom and picked up at the end of the day, or kept in lockers at students' discretion. This will not be optional, and students found with their phones will have them confiscated and brought to the office for pickup by a parent at the end of the day.
  • Students sometimes have the option to listen to music during work time, and this privilege is granted as long as they ask permission, use headphones, and use devices only for music.

2.      Turn in assignments to the proper bin on time

  • Some assignments have specific due dates, and others will not be accepted after the due date. Keep up with these assignments on the website under "Weekly Schedule". Assignments must be handed in by the end of the day on their due dates to be graded.

3.      Tardies should join activities promptly

  • Excessive tardies will affect your learning readiness grade and result in assignments being brought home to complete on personal time.
  • Students who arrive late are expected to join the class activity quietly and promptly. Since instructional time has already begun, they should refrain from socializing and focus on catching up right away.

4.      Pick up after yourself before you leave

  • Take all of your belongings, stack your chair, pick up any scrap papers around you, and put your desk back in line before you leave each day. I am your teacher, not your parent. I do not clean up after you.

5.     Get missed work by checking the class website.

  • If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain any missed classwork.
  • Begin by checking the “Weekly Schedule” tab on the website for what you missed.
  • Then, look for missed handouts in the ABSENT bins labelled Monday-Friday.
  • Then ask another student what you missed.
  • If you check with me, I will simply guide you to do the following steps.
  • Plan to take quizzes and tests immediately after return or before leaving.  It is your responsibility to make these arrangements; I will not and cannot track you down.
  • It is not a parent's job to check in or email the teacher for any classwork. It is also not the teacher's job to run after each student to make sure each assignment is caught up. The website provides all necessary assignments as files for download and printing, or for completion on lined paper.
  • Students need to hand in completed assignments on due dates, regardless of absence. Absence does not excuse incomplete work, and it should not be followed the next day by "I don't know what we're doing, I wasn't here."

6.     Bathroom Breaks need permission, and hall passes

  • Use lunchtime and break time to go to the bathroom. However, if you must go during class, make sure it is at a time when no guidelines or teaching is being done.
  • Students will NOT be allowed to go to the bathroom the first 15 minutes of class at the beginning of the day, after recess and after lunch, as that is daily work, drills and silent reading, respectively.
  • The procedure for a bathroom break is as follows: ask the teacher for permission, grab the Student Hall Pass, and return the pass.

7.     Conflicts and Assignments

  • In middle school, it is the student's responsibility to take charge of their work, conflicts and questions.
  • The website is used to track assignments and due dates, and it is the student's job to ensure they are followed.
  • Monthly Completion Checklists will be sent to parents, along with a Monthly Update, but it is the student's responsibility to ensure that assignments are completed and that there are no issues.
  • When a conflict happens, it is the students' responsibility to come to the teacher to discuss it. Everything is easier to handle when the student gives their perspective, rather than going from student to parent to teacher. Help students build conflict-resolution skills by having them come forward and share what happened so issues can be handled right away, not later.
